So, it is hard to pick the right one that matches your preference and playing level.

As I have been playing table tennis for many years, I have tested bats of different brands. My friends in my club also have used rackets of many brands and we used to share our feelings about these rackets.

Table Tennis Racket Buying Guide

Infographic of buying guide of a table tennis racket

A racket mainly consists of two parts.

  1. Blade
  2. Rubber
A table tennis racket consists of blade and rubber
A Table Tennis Bat

Two rubbers are glued on the surface of the blade to make it a racket.

Mainly concentrate on these factors while choosing your racket.

  • Type of table tennis blade
  • No. of layers of wood in the blade
  • Types of handle
  • Class of table tennis blade
  • Types of rubber
  • Thickness of rubber
  • Three attributes- Speed, Spin, and Control

Type of Blade

Table tennis blades are of two types.

Shakehand, Chinese penhold, and Japanese penhold types table tennis blades
  1. Shakehand style
  2. Penhold style

In the Shakehand style, the grip is like you are shaking hands. In a Penhold grip, you are holding the racket like a pen. The Shakehand grip is more popular than the Penhold grip and it is easy to use for a beginner. If you use a Shakehand grip, you must choose the Shakehand style of blade.
For more regarding the grips in table tennis, you may check my article “Table Tennis Grips: How to Hold a Racket

No. of Layers of Wood in the Blade

Various options of blade layers are available in the market. It may consist of 3 layers, 5 layers, or 7 layers. There may be an extra layer of carbon fiber or other adhesive materials.

Blades with a higher level of layers are harder and faster. A 7-layer blade is faster than a 5-layer blade.

Types of Handle

Types of handles of table tennis rackets
Types of blade handles

The type of handle of the racket is an important factor in selection.
When you look at the specifications of the blade, you will identify three types of handles.
AN – Anatomic
FL – Flared
ST – Straight
The flared type of handle is easy to use for a beginner.

Class of Table Tennis Blade

It is the most important consideration. Class is broadly divided into three categories.

ALL (All-round) – This blade balances speed and control. It is more suitable for beginner and intermediate-level players.
OFF (Offensive)– Here you will get more speed with the sacrifice of control. If your style of play is attacking, opt for this blade. Most professional players use this blade to destroy their opponents.
DEF (Defensive)– If you focus more on control rather than speed, this blade is for you.

Rubber Type

Pimples-in type table tennis rubber
Pimples-in Rubber
Pimples-out type table tennis rubber
Pimples-out Rubber

In general, table tennis rubbers are of two types, Pimples-in or inverted and Pimples-out.

In the pimples-in type of rubber, the pimples are facing inwards, i.e. towards the sponge. So the hitting surface is smooth and you can impart greater variety to your stroke. This rubber is more popular and widely used in all levels of play.

For pimples-out rubber, the pimples are facing outwards. So, you have to hit the ball with the pimpled surface. This type of rubber is a defensive type and an unconventional type of rubber.

Sponge Thickness

Table tennis rubber thickness

The rubber consists of two parts, a sponge and a top sheet. When we are talking about the thickness of the rubber, we only consider the thickness of the sponge.

If you jump into the search query of table tennis rubber, you will notice different rubber thicknesses varying from 1.0 mm to 2.3 mm. More thickness means softer rubber which gives you more speed and spins with the sacrifice of control. In reverse, thinner rubbers give you more control, but less speed.

So a 2.3 mm rubber gives you the ultimate speed whereas a 1.0 mm rubber is for ultimate control. If you are a beginner or intermediate-level player, go for a medium thickness of rubber to keep parity between speed and control.

To identify the authorized rubber, check the ITTF logo beneath the rubber.

Speed, Spin, and Control

The three attributes, speed, spin, and control depend on the above six factors. For a beginner, focus more on control rather than speed. For Intermediate players, the racket of all-round class is ideal.

Choose the Racket mainly concentrating on the three attributes according to your playing style and the level of play.

Best Table Tennis Racket for Intermediate Players in India: Reviews

When you upgrade yourself to the intermediate level, you will rely more on speed to win points. But at the same time, controlling and placing the ball is also important. An all-round bat with everything, i.e. speed, spin, and control, is a better option for the best results.

1. Eastfield Offensive Professional

Eastfield offensive professional table tennis bat

Ben Larcombe and his team gifted the world another outstanding racket. This time they induce more speed and spin along with excellent control.

I have personally played with this excellent racket. This is not like a carbon layer bat where you can only hit the ball with a blistering pace, but you have the least control over your stroke.

This is a racket that can produce excellent speed on your offensive shots, but at the same time, you have the commanding control to place the ball on any part of the table with ease.

Key Features

  • It features an all-wood blade of 7 plies offering exceptional feeling and control of the ball. Ash is the hardwood that makes up the outer layer of the blade.
  • Eastfield A-Pro 2.1mm rubbers provide excellent speed, spin, and control.
  • Performance Rating: Speed – 9/10, Spin – 9/10, Control – 10/10
  • It has a rounded flared handle for a comfortable grip.
  • This racket has got approval from ITTF.
  • It comes in a nice matte black box with silver foiling.

Pros

  • Excellent speed and spin with outstanding control make it an ideal Bat for intermediate players.
  • It aims for greater speed and spins without compromising control.
  • The flared handle makes it convenient to hold.
  • This bat is ITTF-approved.
  • The new Eastfield high-quality black edge tape protects the edges of rubbers during play.

Cons

  • The surface of the rubbers requires cleaning at regular intervals.

2. Palio Legend 3.0 Table Tennis Racket

Palio legend 3 racket

This upgraded version of Palio Legend 2.0, is a collection of joint ventures between Palio, a Chinese Table Tennis Brand, and Expert Table Tennis.

I played with this racket for over 6 months and I experienced exceptional speed. My opponents were astonished by finding the ball at rocket speed from my racket.

When I got this racket, I felt the stickiness of the rubber. Because of the tacky and hard sponge of the Palio Hadou rubbers, I could generate massive topspin and backspin in my stroke. Also, my serves are spinny enough to deceive opponents on many occasions.

For a few weeks, it was hard to control my shots when balls were spinning over the table many times. It takes one or two weeks to get accustomed to this bat.

Key Features

  • Palio Hadou rubbers produce excellent speed and spin.
  • The Palio Legend 3 blade helps generate maximum power.
  • The flared handle makes a comfortable grip.
  • This Bat is ITTF-approved.
  • Speed = 10/10 Spin = 9/10 Control = 6/10
  • It includes a lovely carrying case.

Pros

  • Ideal for the player who loves speed over control
  • Tremendous speed and lethal spin is the key weapon of this racket.
  • ITTF approval makes it eligible to play in international tournaments.
  • The flared handle makes it easy to grip.
  • A nice carrying case protects the rubber from dust and moisture.
  • You can replace the rubber after it is worn out.
  • Value for money

Cons

  • Your perfection of stroke-making should be good enough to control your shots.

FAQs

Is Table Tennis a Racket Sport?

Yes, table tennis is a racket sport like badminton, tennis, and squash. In table tennis, a lightweight ball is hit by a racket to bounce on either side of a table by crossing over a net following certain rules.

Why are table tennis rackets black and red?

The two-color system is used in table tennis to distinguish between the forehand side and the backhand side. It allows a player to judge the types of rubbers used by his opponent. Though only red and black colors are allowed for better visibility, after the Tokyo Olympics 2021, bright colors like blue, green, pink, and purple are also included to use along with red on one side but on the other side, it must be black only.

What is the difference between the red and the black side of a table tennis bat?

Black rubbers are softer and tackier than red rubbers. So the black rubbers spin more than the red rubbers, while the red rubbers are faster than the black rubbers.

What are the differences between a ping pong paddle and a table tennis bat?

1. Ping pong players use Sandpaper face 5 plies laminated paddle. There is no variation in ping pong paddle and every player uses the same type of paddle.
In contradiction, rubber acts as a contact surface in a table tennis bat. There is a wide variety of rubbers of various brands available in the market. Any player can choose any type of rubber. These rubbers are capable of producing greater speed and spin.
2. In table tennis, the majority of blades consist of 3, 5, or 7 layers of plywood whereas ping pong allows only 5 plies laminated paddles.
3. Ping pong bats are generally lighter and cheaper than table tennis bats.

How long does a table tennis bat last?

After about a year of decent usage (2 to 3 times per week), the rubbers will slowly lose their spin and should be replaced. If the rubbers are removable, then new rubbers can be stuck down in their place. Alternatively, you may purchase a new racket.

How do you clean a table tennis racket?

During play, the rubbers attract dust from the ball and will lose their feeling of stickiness. You can simply clean the rubbers by wiping them down with a bit of water on a clean cloth.

Hi Indanil – Can you please tell me the exact weight of Palio Expert 3.0. I am a beginner and need a lightweight racket. I have been playing for a month with GKI bat which weight 195 grams but it’s too heavy for me and my wrist pains. I am interested in buying Palio Expert 3.0 but on Amazon the weight is mentioned as 249 grams, is that correct? Eastfield Allround Professional looks lighter but it’s very expensive for me.

As per my knowledge, the weight of 249 grams mentioned on Amazon, is the packaged weight of the Palio Expert 3.0 racket. The Expert 3.0 weighing around 180 grams, is lighter than the GKI Kung Fu bat.
