Choosing a racket depends on your Playing Level (Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced), Playing Style (Aggressive, All-rounder, and Defensive), and Budget. Amateurs/ Club-level players fall in the category of beginners or intermediates.

A racket has three performance attributes, Speed, Spin, and Control.

As a thumb rule speed is inversely proportional to control, i.e. higher the speed, lower the control, and vice versa.

An offensive bat has more speed and less control.

Speed >Control = Offensive (OFF)

A defensive racket has less speed and more control

Control >Speed = Defensive (DEF)

When both attributes are equal, it is an all-round racket.

Speed = Control All-round (ALL)

Offensive paddles suit advanced players and intermediate players with good exposure to skills.

Beginners must start their journey with defensive rackets.

All-round rackets are ideal for intermediate players.

BeginnersIntermediatesAdvancedClub-level
Defensive (DEF)All-round (ALL)/ Offensive (OFF)Offensive (OFF)Defensive (DEF)/ All-round (ALL)

But how can you identify this type of classification?

All the premade rackets come with the manufacturer’s performance ratings which are visible on the stickers or outer packages.

Examples:

1. Speed = 65, Spin = 70, Control = 100 (Beginners’ choice). A good example is Palio Expert 3.0, which you will find below.

2. Speed = 80, Spin = 85, Control = 80, (Suitable for intermediates). Palio Master 3.0 is an excellent all-round racket.

3. Speed = 95, Spin = 95, Control = 70 (Definitely not for beginners). STIGA Pro Carbon, the most popular offensive racket, is a perfect example.

But what is the basis of this classification? For this, we have to go into more detail.

Shakehand and Penhold types table tennis bats

Table tennis bats are of two types, Shakehand Style (as you are shaking hands) and Penhold Style (like holding a pen). Shakehand rackets are the most popular and convenient way of gripping. You will find most of the premade bats having Shakehand grips.

A racket consists of an oval-shaped table tennis blade on which rubbers are pasted on both sides,

Table tennis blade
Table Tennis Blade

Most of the premade bats have wooden blades of 3-ply, 5-ply, or 7-ply. In general, the higher the no. of plies, the more the speed.

A few high-end paddles like the Pro Carbon are built with composite blades where there are two outer carbon layers over the wooden laminated plies. The presence of carbon material increases the stiffness of the racket which results in more sweet spots and higher speed.

The generation of spin depends on the type of wood used in a blade. As an example, lightweight balsa wood is famous for topspin play.

Handles, the enlarged portions of blades, are three types, Flared (FL), Anatomic (AN), and  Straight (ST). Almost all readymade bats come with flared handles. The FL handles are beginner-friendly and easy to grip.

Types of handles of table tennis blades, i.e. flared (FL), anatomic (AN), and straight (ST)

Rubbers are of three types, Inverted (also called pimples-in or smooth), Pimples-out (Short pips, Medium pips, and Long pips), and Antispin.

Inverted table tennis rubber
Inverted Rubber
Pimples Out rubber
Pimples Out Rubber

Most of the premade paddles are designed with inverted/ smooth rubbers.

Table tennis rubber consisting top sheet and sponge

In table tennis rubbers topsheets are pressed over sponges. The thicker the rubber, the more speed it can generate. As an example, a 2.1 mm (maximum thickness) rubber delivers more speed than a rubber of 1.5 mm thickness.

Thickness of Rubber ∝ Speed

The amount of spin depends on the chemistry of top sheets and sponges. The Chinese tacky rubbers exhibit more spin than non-tacky rubbers. Thicker sponges also deflect balls more to produce higher spins.

All good rubbers have the ITTF logo marked on the bottom. Check it to ensure the quality of the rubber.

As the name suggests, GKI Offensive XX is designed mainly for offensive players. This racket is good for power-hitting with decent speed and spin. But when I had removed the side tape of the bat, I found nearly 2.0 mm thick rubber with an orange-colored sponge.

The good feature of the bat is the control part. It enables you to produce power shots with great control.

The combination of control and power helps generate accuracy in your attacking shots. The ergonomic flared handle gives you comfort in delivering shots.

This racket feels lightweight (Around 150 grams). The good thing is that this GKI Offensive XX is approved by TTFI (Table Tennis Federation of India). That means you are eligible to play with this racket in any type of competition in India, it may be a state-level or national-level tournament.

GKI Euro V, the best table tennis bat under 2000 in India
  • Euro All-wood ply
  • Euro V tensor rubber
  • Speed: 94
  • Spin: 93
  • Control: 95

GKI Euro V is a good choice for intermediate players who want to build their game on power-looping. In comparison to Offensive XX, GKI Euro V is slightly better in speed and spin which makes it easier for topspin play.

GKI Euro V is made with specially designed Euro ply and Euro V rubbers. The Euro V rubber is incorporated with micropores that enhance the elasticity of this rubber. Moreover, Euro v is a tensor rubber, which means the top sheet is stretched before gluing on the sponge during the manufacturing process. Due to this tensor top sheet and elastic sponge, after impact, the ball bounces more and springs off with a higher trajectory. This nature of Euro V rubber is perfect for looping.

GKI Euro V comes with an ergonomically designed handle for better grip. The handle is designed in such a way that it minimizes the vibration at the time of impact which effectively increases the control of your strokes.

The standout feature of the JOOLA Infinity Overdrive lies in its blade construction. Comprising 5-ply wood and 2 layers of Carbon-Kevlar, this blade boosts power, widens the sweet spot, and reduces vibrations for better shot stability.

JOOLA Micron 48 is a tacky rubber that grips the ball more during contact for increased spin on soft strokes, such as serves and pushes. It is an ITTF-approved rubber that has maximum sponge thickness to boost speed and spins significantly.

The Infinity Overdrive paddle enhances performance with powerful attacks and spins, suitable for playing near or away from the table. It offers a trampoline effect for topspin shots but requires good control skills due to its aggressive nature, making it more suitable for experienced players.

The color option (black/black) gives a trendy look but to play tournaments, you must choose the second (black/red) option.

Stiga Evolution, an all-round table tennis racket
  • Blade: 6-Ply wooden
  • Rubber: 2.0 mm
  • Speed: 96
  • Spin: 94
  • Control: 90
  • Approval: ITTF

STIGA Evolution has a 6-ply wooden blade consisting of Ayous, Awan, and Kiri woods that offers excellent control. The wooden blade incorporates crystal technology to harden its outer surface, offering dual benefits. It improves the sweet spot for better consistency in your game and boosts speed due to increased stiffness during ball contact.

STIGA’s 2.0 mm rubber with Nano Composite Technology creates stronger bonds in the top sheets for increased speed and spin. The ACS technology adds microscopic air capsules for a balanced approach to speed and control.

The unique feature of the shock dispersion tube separates this racket from the others. This tube absorbs the vibrations and transfers the energy out of the handle. This gives a nice sound at the time of hitting the ball which gives you a good feeling.

With a very balanced combination of speed, spin, and control, STIGA Evolution is considered one of the best table tennis rackets for all-round intermediate players.

  • Control: 10/10
  • Approval: ITTF
  • It comes in a nice matte black box with silver foiling.

The Eastfield Offensive Professional features a 7-ply all-wood blade and 2.1 mm rubbers. The use of ash hardwood on the outer ply increases the stiffness of the racket which results in more power. Eastfield A-Pro 2.1 mm rubber is fast and spinny.

I have used this racket for a couple of months. The racket feels heavy on my hand. It is a good offensive bat that can hit the ball with a blistering pace, but control is not that easy. The other aspect that gets my attention is its good blocking capability.

One drawback that is certainly to be cared for is the sharp edges of the blade that make it difficult to grip the bat. Use a sandpaper to get rid of it.

  • Massive speed
  • Good spin
  • Great control
  • Ideal for offensive intermediates
  • This bat is ITTF-approved.
  • High-quality black edge tape protector
  • Sanding of sharp edges is required

If you are looking for an Indian brand for good budget-friendly rackets, then the most popular name among the front-runners is GKI.

GKI, a company based in Meerut, offers a wide range of tt bats that are highly popular in India for their affordability and performance. Among the most sought-after good rackets endorsed by the ITTF are the GKI Euro XX and GKI Euro V. For recreational players seeking affordable options, the top picks are the TTFI-approved GKI Offensive XX and Kung Fu DX.

STIGA, Eastfield, and Killerspin stand out as the premium quality non-Indian ping pong racket brands in India. These paddles are crafted with innovative technologies and high-quality materials to deliver superior performance.

Premade paddles are designed to aim at a certain playing level and style. They are built to satisfy the needs of less experienced players, who don’t have that amount of exposure to be very specific to their requirements. But, professionals have specific needs according to their playing strengths and weaknesses. They may want very offensive on their forehand side but a defensive approach on the backhand. These specific needs can’t met by premade bats.

As an example, a combination of Timo Boll ALC (Blade) + Tenergy 05 (Rubber) is ideal for loopers (Offensive topspin players), whereas Timo Boll ZLC (Blade) + Tenergy 64 (Rubber) is good for those attackers who want more speed with a little sacrifice of spin.

After getting a certain level of playing experience, it is good practice to taste customized paddles. You will get the opportunity to explore your talent to the next level.

1. Why are table tennis rackets black and red?

The two-color system is used in table tennis to distinguish between the forehand side and the backhand side. It allows a player to judge the types of rubbers used by his opponent. Though only red and black colors are allowed for better visibility, after the Tokyo Olympics 2021, bright colors like blue, green, pink, and purple are also included to use along with red on one side but on the other side, it must be black only.

2. What is the difference between the red and the black sides of a tt bat?

Black rubbers are slightly softer and tackier than red rubbers. So the black rubbers spin marginally more than the red rubbers, whereas the red rubbers are slightly faster than the black rubbers.

3. How long does a table tennis bat last?

After about a year of decent usage (2 to 3 times per week), the rubbers slowly lose their spin and should be replaced. If the blade is reusable, it is better to paste a usable good-quality rubber. Alternatively, you may purchase a new racket.

4. How do you clean your tt racket?

During play, the rubbers attract dust from the ball and lose their feeling of stickiness. You can simply clean the rubbers by wiping them down with a bit of water on a clean cloth.

It’s good practice to put your racket in a good-quality cover after play.
