When we think about a ping pong table, the image of a simple table divided by a net comes in front of our eyes. But there are many more things beyond what meets our eyes. The knowledge of ping pong table dimensions plays a significant role not only to get acquainted with the game but also to match your requirements. Why do you need a table tennis table? Is it for serious play or for recreation? How much space do you have in your room? What is your budget? The size of a table tennis table is very relevant to all these queries.

The official size of a ping pong table is:

  • 9 ft x 5 ft x 2.5 ft
  • 108” x 60” x 30”
  • 274 cms x 152.5 cms x 76 cms.

Dimensions of a Standard Size Ping Pong Table

Rule 2.1.1 of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) says

The upper surface of the table, known as the playing surface, shall be rectangular, 2.74m long and 1.525m wide, and shall lie in a horizontal plane 76cm above the floor.

Rule 2.1.1
Dimensions of a standard ping pong table

A table tennis table has two parts, a rectangular upper tabletop which is the playing surface, and an undercarriage on which the tabletop rests. The dimensions given below represent the size of a ping pong table in feet, inches, and mm.

Example: JOOLA Inside

  • Length: 9 ft/ 108"/ 274 cm

  • Width: 5 ft / 60"/ 152.2 cm

  • Height: 2.5 ft / 30 "/ 76 cm

  • Thickness: 5/8 inches

  • Weight: 149 lbs (67.59 kg)

Rule 2.1.2

The playing surface shall not include the vertical sides of the tabletop.

Rule 2.1.2

The horizontal flat area of the tabletop is the playing surface. If the ball hits the vertical side, it is considered out of the table. The situation of conflict arises when the ball hits the edge of the table. If the ball touches the edge of the table, it is good.

Rule 2.1.4

The playing surface shall be uniformly dark coloured and matt, but with a white side line, 2cm wide, along each 2.74m edge and a white end line, 2cm wide, along each 1.525m edge.

Rule 2.1.4
Marking on the table tennis table surface

On the surface of both sides of the table, there are white sidelines of 2 cm. Also, there are two white end lines 2 cm wide. These lines indicate the end of the table along its length or width. The reason for putting these marking lines is to visualize the end of the table. These white lines are useful to give you an idea about the point of contact when the ball changes its trajectory after hitting the edge of the table.

Rule 2.1.6

For doubles, each court shall be divided into 2 equal half-courts by a white centre line, 3mm wide, running parallel with the side lines; the centre line shall be regarded as part of each right half-court.

Rule 2.1.6
Service area in doubles
Doubles Serve Area

The existence of a 3 mm white centerline comes into action in doubles. This centerline is parallel to the sideline and divides the table equally along its length.

In singles, you can serve anywhere. But in doubles, you have to serve diagonally from your right half to your opponent’s right half of the table.

Note that if the ball lands on the centerline, it is considered good.

Table Thickness

Ping pong tables vary in thickness, with thicker tables offering better bounce and durability. Tournament-grade tables are 25 mm thick for superior playability. For home entertainment, 15 – 18 mm tables are good enough to balance needs and budget.

Net Height

A table tennis net is clamped at the edge of the table

To ensure good playability, you have to set up the net at a height of 15.25 cm (6”) supported by two posts fixed centrally at each side of the table. The tensioning arrangement helps to keep the height the same throughout the entire net length.

The above two images give you an idea regarding the size of a folded table tennis table in two different situations.

Table Tennis Table Dimensions (Non-Standard)

There are also options for some small sizes when there is a concern regarding price and space. Several companies like Butterfly, Joola, and Stiga manufacture a wide variety of small tables. Though length and width are shorter for small-sized tables, the height is the same as a full-size table tennis table so that you don’t mess up with your techniques.

3/4 Size Ping Pong Table

The ¾ size table has the closest dimensions compared to a standard-sized table. A popular example is the Butterfly Junior Ping Pong table where the size is kept slightly smaller keeping the price considerably low. Apart from the budget, the other advantage of this recreational table is that you need a smaller room size to accommodate the table.

Table Tennis Table Top Size

Table tennis table tops, solely used for recreational purposes, are placed on a structure like a dining table or pool table. A standard-size top has the same dimensions (9′ x 5′) in length and width but the height depends on the height of the structure on which the tabletop is placed.

Outdoor Ping Pong Table Dimensions

Outdoor tables have the same official dimensions as regulation indoor tables. The difference is the material of the tabletop. Outdoor tables are designed in such a way that they can withstand heat and water all year round. Also, outdoor tables are sturdier than indoor tables.

Dimensions of an Outdoor table:

  • Length: 9 feet (2.74 m)
  • Width: 5 feet (1.525 m)
  • Height: 2.5 feet (0.76 m)

Consider the Available Space

Rule 3.2.3.1 of ITTF says that the playing area should not be less than 14m long, 7m wide, and 5m high. This recommendation is for competitions where players need sufficient space to get behind the ball.

Before considering a ping pong table for your home, it’s important to measure the area where you plan to place the table. If you have a dedicated game room, a standard-size table may be the best option. However, if you have limited space, a smaller table would be more practical.

For a full-size table, you need at least 5 ft of space at each end and 3.5 ft of space at each side for movement and free swing of your racket. You need at least a 19 ft x 12 ft room size to play the game conveniently.
